What are the forms of PCB assembly SMT IC sockets?
As the user actively transition from the DIP to SMT, the inserted components are only electromechanical components. Faced with this situation, PCB manufacturers are paying close attention to the advent of new surface mount products. So what are the two types of PCB assembly SMT IC sockets? FASTPCBA share with you as below.
PCB assembly surface mount sockets are usually available in two forms. The first is designed for insertion, which converts the surface mount IC into insertion mount. Transfer sockets are a good choice when you want to use a surface mount package on a full-insertion mount board. In this way, the existing insertion line can be used to assemble the entire pcb assembly board without developing a new assembly board that only mounts the surface mount components.
The second form of socket is designed for surface PCB assembly. It has roughly the same pad pattern as the original package, so if the design is reasonable, the board can be either directly mounted IC or an interchangeable socket. Such sockets are commonly used in general-purpose ROM chips that were produced in the early days.
There is no metal bond between the socket and the component leads, but it is completely dependent on mechanical contact, so they are not as strong as soldering. Such contacts may be corroded in high-humidity environments, mechanical contacts may break during shock or vibration, and sockets are expensive, so not all components are considered for using sockets, but only used properly. For example, sockets used in pcb assembly component testing or aging systems must be subjected to repeated insertion and removal, and they must be designed to be more durable.
